Easter celebration get together

The parish council with the  Hellenic community would like to celebrate Easter Sunday Greek style with a BBQ after the end of  The Vespers of Agape around  1pm in the church grounds.

We are going to organise this BBQ ourselves and would love as many from the Hellenic community to join us.  We are asking for each family to participate as regarding to food.  We would ask that each family bring some meat suitable for cooking on BBQ and if each family could bring either salads/other starters/gyka/pitta/Easter biscuits or whatever each person feels they would like to cook/bake.

If everybody could get back to me to let me know what each family will bring would be great so we don’t have the same of everything or end up with too much salads etc.  Then I can email you all again and let you all know if we need anything else etc.  We would love to have some music too so anybody with some Cd’s that they would like to hear bring them along too.

Also if you know of other people who are not included in this email and would like to come to forward them the details. My mobile is 087 1924528 if  anybody wishes to contact me.

Thanks all,
Martina/Kostas Halkiadakis

Classic Stage Ireland presents The Oresteia Trilogy

Classic Stage Ireland presents the first ever Irish production of The Oresteia Trilogy

Classic Stage Ireland (CSI) continues its acclaimed exploration of Greek Tragedy at Project Arts Centre this March with a full-scale staging of Aeschylus’ Agamemnon in a new adaptation by Andy Hinds. The production is Part I of the Oresteia Trilogy

The Oresteia is the only fully intact Ancient Greek trilogy to survive and is widely considered to be one of the greatest achievements of Western culture. Following its presentation of Agamemnon, CSI will complete the trilogy later this year with a staging of the two concluding parts, to mark the first professional presentation of trilogy for the Irish stage.

Once again CSI has assembled a large and exceptionally talented company for this production including CSI favourites, Lesa Thurman and Michael Bates as Clytemnestra and Agamemnon respectively – a continuation of their portrayal of the characters from the company’s 2011 production of Iphigenia in Aulis.

The Oresteia trilogy consists of Agamemnon, Libation Bearers and Eumenides. It is the seminal text of Greek theatre becoming a classic soon after its first performance in 458 B.C.

Part I: Agamemnon – March 16 – 31, Project Arts Centre

In Iphigenia in Aulis (CSI, June 2011), Clytemnestra swore vengeance on her husband, Agamemnon, for sacrificing their daughter, Iphigenia – all so that his thousand ships could sail to conquer Troy.

When Agamemnon returns in triumph Clytemnestra appears to have forgotten her vow of vengeance and greets him with shows of overwhelming joy; however her true intent is yet to be revealed. When she invites her husband to enter the palace on a river of blood-red cloth, a great foreboding fills the hearts of the city elders. The curse on the royal house of Argos is not yet broken…

The new Prometheus: why Byron went to fight in the Greek Revolution

Irish-Hellenic Society
Inaugural Lecture 21 October 2011 at 7pm in Global Irish Institute Clinton Auditorium, UCD, Belfield Dublin 4
By Professor Roderick Beaton

The new Prometheus: why Byron went to fight in the Greek Revolution

The story of Byron’s death at Mesolonghi on 19 April 1824 is well known.

It ended one ofthe most extraordinary poetic careers in English literature, and added one ofthe best-known names in Europe at the time to the roll-call of foreign Philhellenes who gave their lives for the independence of Greece.
But beyond the legend ofheroic self-sacrifice in a noble cause, there is another story to be told.

What was it, about Byron’s personality, his career as a poet, his political ideas, that brought him to the point of committing his life and his wealth to the cause of  Greece?

Was it mere gesture, as some have supposed?

What did Greece really mean for Byron, at the beginning ofthe 1820s?

What did he have to contribute to the struggle?

These are the questions that this lecture addresses.
