Iphigenia in Aulis

Classic Stage Ireland

Presents

‘Iphigenia in Aulis’

Continuing their exploration of Ancient Greek drama started with ‘The Bacchae’ and ‘Oedipus the King’, Classic Stage Ireland return with another gripping Greek tragedy, Euripides’ Iphigenia in Aulis: a powerful tale of human sacrifice and the eternal conflict between personal loyalties and the greater good.

When Helen, Queen of Sparta, abandons her husband for the Prince of Troy a thousand ships are launched on a mission to reclaim her and to punish Troy.

The fleet is becalmed at Aulis and goddess Artemis decrees if the fleet’s commander Agamemnon will sacrifice his daughter to her she will send a wind to drive them on to war. His daughter, Iphigenia, is summoned but when her mother, Clytemnestra, uncovers the plan she resolves to halt the sacrifice at any cost.
