EMPORIUM is an experimental and performative event where art meets a city street. This dynamic one day happening is an opportunity to explore and experience not only the artworks but the colour, tastes and sounds of a particular urban space in the heart of Dublin. The curator was invited by the festival to present the work of members of Art Nomads, a collective of visual artists from migrant and diverse cultural traditions based in Ireland. The artist Laragh Pittman’s work ‘The Invisible City’ ( Five Lamps Arts Festival 2021) led her to think outside the gallery space for this project and to a yearlong research into the history and changing fabric of the east side of Parnell Street and its unofficial designation as Dublin’s China Town.
An EMPORIUM, a word originally from ancient Greece, is a trading place for the exchange of goods coming from far and wide. Dublin is a space where art, culture and daily life meet and Parnell Street is a great example of this ever changing city. Once named Great Britain Street is has been a witness to many states of change. Today it has several remaining long established family businesses alongside a vibrant range of small migrant run outlets. Like the influx of the global trade in foodstuffs and retail materials, artists make their contribution to the changing culture in Ireland through their industry, expression and crafting of artefacts. The participating artists and businesses represent cultures from all across the world and highlight both the differences but also the interconnectivity between us all..
Dancer Silver Kezir and activist Tian Yu Lloyd join curator Laragh Pittman to take the audience on a tour of the street to sample its sights, smells and stories. Members of Art Nomads, Muhammad Achour, Hina Khan, Tomasz Madajczak, Roxana Manouchehri, Joe Odiboh, Rajinder Singh and Amna Walayat bring their artistic practice to share. Invited artists Tuqa AlSarraj, Gráinnemir, Leia Mocan, Ala Buisir and Nova Garvie join this installation with its range of painting, sculpture, photography, video, performance and storytelling. A limited edition artist’s publication will accompany this event.

📣 TCD Classics MPhil applicants - funding opportunity. Details below.
The project ‘Fostering Cypriot and Greek Studies in Ireland’ based in the Department of Classics, Trinity College Dublin, is offering a bursary of €1000 (towards the cost of tuition fees) for a student registered on the MPhil in Classics. This bursary is addressed to candidates with a background in Cypriot and/or Greek Archaeology and planning to pursue their interests in any of these areas.
