Classic Stage Ireland presents The Oresteia Trilogy

Classic Stage Ireland presents the first ever Irish production of The Oresteia Trilogy

Classic Stage Ireland (CSI) continues its acclaimed exploration of Greek Tragedy at Project Arts Centre this March with a full-scale staging of Aeschylus’ Agamemnon in a new adaptation by Andy Hinds. The production is Part I of the Oresteia Trilogy

The Oresteia is the only fully intact Ancient Greek trilogy to survive and is widely considered to be one of the greatest achievements of Western culture. Following its presentation of Agamemnon, CSI will complete the trilogy later this year with a staging of the two concluding parts, to mark the first professional presentation of trilogy for the Irish stage.

Once again CSI has assembled a large and exceptionally talented company for this production including CSI favourites, Lesa Thurman and Michael Bates as Clytemnestra and Agamemnon respectively – a continuation of their portrayal of the characters from the company’s 2011 production of Iphigenia in Aulis.

The Oresteia trilogy consists of Agamemnon, Libation Bearers and Eumenides. It is the seminal text of Greek theatre becoming a classic soon after its first performance in 458 B.C.

Part I: Agamemnon – March 16 – 31, Project Arts Centre

In Iphigenia in Aulis (CSI, June 2011), Clytemnestra swore vengeance on her husband, Agamemnon, for sacrificing their daughter, Iphigenia – all so that his thousand ships could sail to conquer Troy.

When Agamemnon returns in triumph Clytemnestra appears to have forgotten her vow of vengeance and greets him with shows of overwhelming joy; however her true intent is yet to be revealed. When she invites her husband to enter the palace on a river of blood-red cloth, a great foreboding fills the hearts of the city elders. The curse on the royal house of Argos is not yet broken…
